The cost of going to law can stop people getting justice. Legal Aid is confined to an increasingly small number of people who satisfy a strict means test. If you're worried about not being able to get justice because you can't afford the prohibitive cost of going through the court, consider taking out legal expense insurance.
Many people already have some legal expense protection but don't realise it. These policies are often sold as add ons to car insurance and household contents insurance policies.
The add on to a car insurance policy will usually cover the cost of court cases following a road accident and pay for a hire care while you're off the road. The household version usually covers consumer disputes, personal injury cases and disputes with your employer. These policies often add between £7.50 and £15 a year to the cost of your insurance policy.
Among the insurers who offer legal expense insurer are: Allianz, Commercial Union, DAS, Hambro Legal Protection and Legal Protection Group.
