Institute of Actuaries

There is a gross calumny which claims that actuaries are people who found accountancy too exciting. Not true!

Actuaries are in fact pinstriped bookmakers. They are professional people employed, usually, by insurance companies because they have special skills in calculating insurance rates by reference to the mathematical laws of probability to measure potential risks. In England, these people are members of the Institute of Actuaries, in Scotland the Faculty of Actuaries.
