Horizontal Integration

Horizontal integration is the merger of two or more companies that are in the same line of business.

For example, if supermarkets group, Tesco merged with rivals J.Sainsbury, that would be considered as 'horizontal' integration. If the merged business went on to take over Asda, that would be more 'horizontal' integration. Not that City regulators would likely let either outcome happen however!
